The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in the Sigiriya area, then heads to Polonnaruwa's Archaeological Museum: a good entry point if you want context before walking the ruins themselves. From there, you move through the ancient city's main sites: the Palace of King Parakramabahu with its meter-thick walls and seven-story footprint, the Vatadage's perfectly circular shrine with four granite Buddha statues, the Gal Vihara's four rock-carved Buddhas including a 14-meter reclining figure, and the Lankathilaka Image House with its 17-meter walls. You'll also pass the Rankoth Vehera stupa, the Pothgul Viharaya (believed to be an ancient library), and smaller temples like Siva Devalaya. The ruins sit across a landscape dotted with ancient tanks: reservoirs like the Parakrama Sea and Giritale Tank that still function after 800 years.
If you book the safari package, the afternoon shifts to Minneriya National Park, where you ride in a 4x4 jeep with your driver to spot wild elephants. The park is ranked number one in Sri Lanka for elephant sightings, and the season matters: July through September is peak gathering time, when herds of 300 or more congregate at the reservoir. Younger elephants play in the water, and the light at sunset turns the scene golden. The jeep lets you move closer than you could on foot, and your driver knows where the herds tend to gather.
The whole day runs 8 to 10 hours. You'll need to arrange entrance fees to both Polonnaruwa and Minneriya separately, and lunch is on your own. Water and hotel pickup are covered. An expert driver is included on every booking. If you want a guide to explain the ruins' history and architecture as you walk, that's an add-on you can choose at checkout.

Is this one for you?Choose the Polonnaruwa City option if you want to focus entirely on the ancient ruins and temples without the drive to the national park. Pick the safari package if you want both the ruins and a chance to see wild elephants at Minneriya: the jeep access and your driver's knowledge of where herds gather make the difference between a distant view and close wildlife moments.

Top questions
Can I visit just Polonnaruwa without the safari, or do I have to book both?
You can choose the Polonnaruwa City option alone, which skips Minneriya entirely and focuses the full day on the ruins and the Archaeological Museum. The safari package is a separate option you select at checkout if you want it.
What are the chances of seeing elephants in Minneriya if I go during the dry season?
Minneriya is best from July through September, when 300 or more elephants gather at the reservoir: the world's largest Asian elephant congregation. Outside those months, sightings are less reliable. Your driver will know current conditions and where herds are moving.
Do I need to pay for entry to Polonnaruwa and Minneriya separately?
Yes, entrance fees to both sites are not included in the tour price. You'll pay them on arrival at each location.
What time does the tour start, and when will I be back at my hotel?
The tour picks you up from your hotel in Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla and runs 8 to 10 hours total, so timing depends on your pickup time. Ask the operator for the exact departure and return window when you book.
Is the Polonnaruwa site guide included, or is that extra?
The expert driver is included on every tour and knows the best photo spots and shortcuts. A dedicated site guide who explains the history and architecture of the ruins is available as an add-on you can select at checkout.
Can young children or infants do this tour?
Yes. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller through the ruins, and specialized infant seats are available for the vehicle. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though the ruins involve walking across uneven ground and climbing some stone platforms.
