Hiking and Village Exploration in Kandy
- Hike Knuckles forest and mountains
- Explore Heeloya rural agriculture village
- Lunch and visit Poddalgoda village
- Swim in natural waterfall pool
The experience
The day starts with a climb into Knuckles forest, where the terrain opens onto rock faces and mountain views. You move through three distinct villages: Heeloya first, a paddy-farming settlement where the village headman's court still sits in its original building, then Poddalgoda, where you eat lunch cooked in a home kitchen and walk the cultivated fields that surround it. Between villages you pass through tea plantations that slope down the hillside, the kind that supply Sri Lankan leaf to buyers worldwide. A guide walks with you the whole way, pointing out endemic bird species, the layout of the land and the work that sustains each place.
Heeloya sits deep in the Kandy district and lives on paddy cultivation, home gardens, livestock and spice trading. Villagers also tap toddy and keep bees. The village still practices traditional handicrafts and dance. Poddalgoda is smaller and more remote, built around the same rice-farming rhythm but offering a direct look at how an eco-village operates. The route passes through rice fields and canal banks, and you'll see the work of the season (planting, tending, or harvest) depending on when you go. At the end of the day, you reach a small waterfall that falls from the Knuckles Reserve into a natural pool deep enough to swim in. Most tours finish here with a cool-off before the drive back.
The tour runs 6 to 8 hours and includes private transportation from your hotel, bottled water, all entrance fees to the forest, village meals, coffee or tea, and mineral water bottles throughout the day. Pickup is arranged as part of the booking. The walking is steady and the ground is uneven. The climb is real but the pace is set by the group. Minimum age is 18.

Is this one for you?The walk is steady over uneven ground for 6 to 8 hours, so it suits hikers comfortable with a full day of climbing and descending through forest and farmland. If you want to move slowly or take frequent breaks, this pace may not fit. If you want to swim in a mountain pool and eat in a working village rather than a restaurant, this tour is built for that.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the actual hiking like on this Knuckles Village tour?
The route climbs into Knuckles forest with rock outcrops to scramble over, then descends through tea plantations and rice fields between villages. The ground is uneven and the pace is steady over 6 to 8 hours, with stops to eat and explore each settlement. It's not a technical climb, but it is a full day of walking uphill and down.
Do I eat with the villagers, or is the food brought in?
Lunch is cooked in a village home in Poddalgoda and eaten there, so you eat what locals prepare. Coffee and tea are included throughout the day, and you'll taste village foods at other stops. The meals are part of the tour, not a separate purchase.
What birds and wildlife will I actually see on this hike?
Knuckles forest is home to endemic bird species found nowhere else in Sri Lanka, and the guide knows where to spot them. You'll also see the fauna and flora of the reserve (what lives in the forest and what grows there), but sightings depend on the season and the time of day you're walking.
Is the waterfall pool safe to swim in, and do I need to bring a swimsuit?
The natural pool at the end of the day is fed by a waterfall dropping from the Knuckles Reserve and is deep enough to swim in. Bring a swimsuit and a towel if you want to use it. It's optional, not mandatory.
How does pickup work, and what time does the tour start?
Pickup from your Kandy hotel is included in the tour price. The operator will confirm the pickup time when you book. The full day runs 6 to 8 hours from start to finish.
