The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and heads to the Madu River, where a boat safari takes you through 61 hectares of mangrove forest. Fourteen of the 24 mangrove species found in Sri Lanka grow here, and the dense growth supports over 300 wetland plant species, 19 of them found nowhere else. The forest acts as a natural barrier against erosion and flooding. It was this mangrove wall that protected the region during the 2004 tsunami. You move through the waterways by boat, seeing the ecosystem that depends on these trees.

Next is the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, run by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka since 1988. The hatchery collects eggs laid along the beach at night and buries them in sand. After about 50 days, the baby turtles are released into the sea. The project has released roughly 3.5 million hatchlings into the wild. The facility also keeps injured or disabled turtles, including albino turtles that cannot survive outdoors. You see the tanks and the process, and if timing allows, you may watch the nighttime release of hatchlings into the ocean.

The tour ends at Galle Fort, the UNESCO World Heritage site on the southwest coast. Built first by the Portuguese in 1588 and then extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onward, the fort has stood for over 423 years. The Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka has maintained it carefully, and today it remains a working town with a multi-ethnic population living inside the walls. You walk the fort's perimeter and streets, seeing the blend of European architecture and South Asian traditions that earned it UNESCO recognition. Your guide is with you throughout, and the air-conditioned vehicle waits for the return to your hotel.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years); Infant (1 to 5 years): free.

What exactly happens at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project?

The Kosgoda project protects Sri Lanka's sea turtles from extinction by collecting eggs laid on the beach, incubating them in sand for about 50 days, and releasing the hatchlings into the sea at night. The facility also houses injured or disabled turtles, including rare albino individuals. Since 1988, the project has released approximately 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild.

Can I see the baby turtles being released into the ocean?

The hatchlings are released at night, and timing depends on when eggs have incubated for the full 50 days. Your guide will confirm whether a nighttime release is possible during your visit. It is not guaranteed on every tour date.

How long is the boat ride through the Madu River mangroves?

The Madu River Safari is part of the half-day itinerary, but the exact duration of the boat portion is not fixed: your guide adjusts the time spent based on what you want to see and photograph in the 61-hectare mangrove forest.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, private transportation, an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, WiFi on board, and all fees and taxes are included. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included in the tour price.

How far is Hikkaduwa from Galle Fort?

Galle Fort is 14 kilometers from Hikkaduwa, a coastal town that sits 98 kilometers south of Colombo. The drive is part of your private tour route.
