The Experience

The jeep picks you up from your hotel in one of the South Coast towns—Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle, Ella or a dozen others—and heads inland to Udawalawe National Park. The drive takes time, but the park itself is where the day opens up: grasslands and wetlands spread across the reserve, and the wildlife moves through them without barriers. Your driver-guide navigates the park by 4x4 jeep for roughly three to three and a half hours, stopping where elephants are feeding or water buffalo gather at the wetland edges. Crocodiles sun themselves on the banks, monkeys move through the scrub, and the birdlife shifts constantly—the park holds more than 200 bird species, and the open terrain means you see them without the canopy getting in the way.

The Elephant Transit Home sits inside the park and is a separate stop on the route. It's a rehabilitation facility established in 1995 by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation, and it holds orphaned elephant calves that are being prepared for release back into the wild. Seeing the younger animals in this setting adds a different angle to the day—not the wild herds in the grassland, but the individual animals being cared for before they rejoin them. Entry to the facility is included, and your guide explains what happens there.

Lunch arrives partway through the day, and bottled water travels with you throughout. The return journey follows the same route back to your hotel, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening depending on which departure time you chose. The whole package—transport both ways, the jeep safari, both entry fees, the meal and the guide—is settled before you book, so there are no negotiations at pickup or surprises at the gate.

Top questions

Can I book a morning or afternoon safari, and does the timing change what I see?

Udawalawe safaris run in both morning and afternoon slots, and you choose which one at checkout. Morning departures tend to catch animals more active in the cooler hours, while afternoon trips work for travellers with a slower start to their day. The wildlife moves throughout the day, so both times offer sightings—the difference is mainly your own schedule and energy.

What animals am I most likely to see on the Udawalawe safari?

Udawalawe is known for its wild elephants, and herds are common sightings on the jeep route. Water buffalo, crocodiles, deer, monkeys and over 200 bird species also live in the park. The grasslands and wetlands give you clear sight lines, so animals are visible without heavy forest cover getting in the way.

Is the Elephant Transit Home visit separate from the main safari, or part of the same route?

The Elephant Transit Home is a stop included in the tour and sits within Udawalawe National Park. You visit it as part of the day's itinerary, and entry is covered in the package price. It's a facility where orphaned elephant calves are rehabilitated before release into the wild.

Where can I be picked up, and does the pickup location change the price?

Pickup is available from hotels across the South Coast—Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle, Ella and many other towns, as well as from Colombo and the airport area. You select your pickup location when you book, and the price is the same regardless of which town you're in. The driver collects you and drops you back at the same hotel at the end of the day.

How long is the jeep safari itself, and how much time do I spend driving versus at stops?

The jeep safari portion runs approximately three to three and a half hours inside the park. The full day, including hotel pickup, the drive to the park, the safari, the Elephant Transit Home visit, lunch and the return journey, takes nine to thirteen hours depending on your location and departure time.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

The package includes hotel pickup and drop-off, private jeep transport with a driver-guide, entry to Udawalawe National Park, entry to the Elephant Transit Home, lunch and bottled water. Gratuities, breakfast and additional drinks are not included and are your choice to add.
