Udawalawe National Park Safari and Visit

  • Pick up from hotel early morning
  • Arrive at Udawalawe National Park
  • Safari jeep tour in the park
  • Observe elephants and wildlife
  • Optional visit to Elephant Transit Home
  • Enjoy lunch in Udawalawe

The Experience

You're picked up from your hotel between 3am and 4am—early enough that the drive to Udawalawa leaves time for the animals to gather at the water before the heat sets in. The park is home to Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo and crocodiles, plus over 150 bird species. Your private jeep moves through the park with your guide, who navigates the routes where wildlife congregates. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water comes with you.

Udawalawa Tank, the park's central water source, draws animals throughout the morning. This is where most sightings happen. The jeep stops when the guide spots movement—elephants at the shoreline, deer in the grass, birds overhead. Leopards are rare but recorded in the park; most mornings bring elephants and smaller mammals. The safari runs until mid-morning, then you head to lunch in Udawalawa town before the return drive to your hotel.

If you want to extend the day, the Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home is an optional stop after lunch. It's a rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned elephants. The choice is yours at checkout. The whole outing takes around 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. You can book from Hikkaduwa, Galle, Weligama or any coastal town between Benthota and Misrissa—the driver adjusts the pickup time based on where you're staying.

What animals am I likely to see on the Udawalawa safari?

Udawalawa is home to Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo and crocodiles. Over 150 bird species have been recorded in the park. Leopards are rare but do live there. Morning visits to the water sources give the best chance of sightings.

Park entry is optional at checkout, so you choose whether to add it when you book. The jeep, guide, bottled water, air-conditioned vehicle and parking are included in the tour price.

Can I book the safari if I'm staying in Galle or Weligama instead of Hikkaduwa?
