The Experience
The tour runs four hours and covers the main landmarks of Colombo by tuk-tuk, starting with pickup from your hotel. A live guide drives and narrates in English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of several other languages, pointing out the architecture and history as you move through the city. The route takes you through Pettah, the neighborhood market where narrow streets fill with local vendors and stalls, then moves to the waterfront landmarks and colonial-era buildings that frame Colombo's past.
Entry is included to over 15 sites: the Gangaramaya Temple, a significant Buddhist sanctuary with an extensive collection of artifacts; Galle Face Green, the 500-meter oceanside promenade laid out in 1859; the Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar), finished in 1909 with its distinctive Indo-Saracenic design; the Colombo Maritime Museum, housed in a former Dutch prison from 1676; and the Independence Memorial Hall, built to commemorate independence from British rule. You also stop at the Old Town Hall, the Old Parliament building (now the Presidential Secretariat), and walk through Victoria Park, the oldest and largest park in the Port of Colombo.
The itinerary includes the Floating Market on Beira Lake, where vendors sell fruits, vegetables and flowers from wooden boats, and a visit to a Ceylon tea outlet and gem shop. The Colombo Lighthouse, dating to 1952, and the Sri Kailavasanaathar Hindu Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in the city with Dravidian-style carvings, are also on the route. Some tours add entry to the Gangaramaya Temple's sister site, Seema Malakaya, a meditation temple on the lake, and the Colombo Lotus Tower, South Asia's tallest self-supported structure, depending on which option you book at checkout.
