The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the sound—Colombo doesn’t really wake up slowly. Our tuk tuk driver, Saman, grinned as he weaved us straight into the chaos of Pettah Market. I remember the smell of jackfruit mixing with car exhaust, vendors calling out prices in Sinhala, and a flash of red from the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque’s striped walls. We zipped past colonial buildings and suddenly there was the Lotus Tower, all glassy and tall against a sky that looked like rain but never quite delivered. I didn’t expect to care about a skyscraper but Saman said it’s the tallest in South Asia now—he sounded proud. At Galle Face Green, families picnicked on faded blankets while teenagers played cricket with whatever they could find for bats. The sea breeze smelled faintly salty and fried snacks drifted over from food carts nearby. I bought some tea at a shop Saman liked—he said it was “real Ceylon”, which apparently means something special here.

The Gangaramaya Temple felt quieter than I thought it would; bells chimed somewhere behind a wall, incense hung in the air (sweet but also sharp), and an old man offered me a lotus flower for luck. There were so many textures—smooth stone steps, rough prayer flags fluttering above Beira Lake. We stopped at another temple too, this one Hindu, covered in bright carvings of Shiva and Ganesh—I probably missed half the meaning but still felt welcome somehow.

By the time we reached Independence Memorial Hall my shirt was sticking to my back but I didn’t mind much. Saman told stories about British rule and cricket matches on Galle Face Green—half history lesson, half gossip. We ended at a jewelry shop where I almost bought a sapphire ring (didn’t have the nerve), then wound back through traffic as dusk settled over Victoria Park. Honestly, I still think about that first glimpse of red mosque tiles between two buses—it just stuck with me for some reason.
