The Experience

There’s something about Colombo from the backseat of a tuk tuk — you’re close to everything, but never quite in the middle of it. The first thing I noticed was the way our driver, Nuwan, grinned when he handed us bottled water and asked if we wanted to start at Gangaramaya Temple or the Red Mosque. We picked the temple because I’d read about its odd mix of old statues and plastic Buddhas (which is true — there’s even a glass case with a tiny vintage car inside). It smelled faintly like incense and old wood, and there was this gentle clatter of prayer beads somewhere behind us. I tried to tie my sarong properly but gave up after two tries; Nuwan just laughed and fixed it for me.

The city felt different once we zipped past the Town Hall — suddenly it was all honking horns, flashes of color from sari shops, and that thick, humid air that sticks to your arms. Pettah Market was chaos in every direction: fruit sellers shouting prices, someone frying snacks that made my stomach growl (I still don’t know what they were called), and kids darting between stalls with impossible speed. Our guide pointed out the Lotus Tower in the distance — said it’s one of South Asia’s tallest buildings, though honestly I was more interested in the little cups of sweet tea he bought us near the floating market. The tea was hot enough to burn my tongue but worth it.

I didn’t expect Galle Face Green to be so wide open — just grass and sky meeting the Indian Ocean. There were families picnicking under faded umbrellas, kites tangled in sea breeze, and vendors selling spiced mango slices (which are way better than they look). We sat on a low wall for a while watching waves slap against rocks; it felt quieter than anywhere else all day. By then I’d stopped caring about seeing “all” the sights — just sitting there with sticky fingers from mango juice felt like enough.
