We were already wobbling along the edge of Turia Gardens when our guide, Marta, called out something about orange blossoms. I’d barely gotten used to the bike (it’s been years), but that smell—sweet and sharp, almost like honey—cut right through my nerves. The sun was out but not hot, just enough to make me squint at the green all around. Marta pointed to a group of old men playing cards under a tree and grinned, “They’re here every morning.” I liked that. It made Valencia feel lived-in, not just for tourists.
We stopped near the old city walls where she explained how this riverbed used to flood the whole place before they turned it into gardens. There was a breeze coming off the Mediterranean that made my shirt flap against my back. Kids were running around by the water and someone had set up a little food cart selling horchata (I still think about that taste; sweet, cold, nutty). The ride wasn’t hard at all—Valencia’s so flat you barely notice you’re moving sometimes. Three hours went by fast. I left with legs only slightly tired and way too many tips on where to eat paella later.
