You’ll get hands-on with SUP basics right on El Campello’s calm coastline. With small groups and friendly instructors, it’s easy to learn—even if you’ve never tried before. The mix of gentle waves and expert guidance makes this a relaxed but rewarding way to connect with nature and pick up new skills.
The first thing that hit me was the salty breeze—El Campello’s beach wakes you up fast, even before you step onto the sand. Our instructor, Juan, greeted us right by the water’s edge, wetsuits already lined up on a faded wooden bench. He started off showing us the paddleboard basics: where to stand, how to grip the paddle (not as easy as it looks), and what each part of the board does. I noticed he kept glancing at the sky—apparently, mornings here are best since the wind picks up after lunch.
We practiced getting our balance on the sand first. My knees wobbled a bit when I finally stood up on the real board out in the shallow water. Juan was patient—he’d seen plenty of beginners tip over (I did too, once). The water wasn’t cold but had that early summer chill that wakes you up. We learned how to turn by switching hands on the paddle and shifting our weight—felt awkward at first but got easier after a few tries. There were only four of us in the group, so we got lots of help and tips. By the end, I could steer toward a yellow buoy floating near some fishing boats without spinning in circles.
