The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much before noon, honestly. The first thing that hit me was the salty breeze as we stepped onto the yacht in Puerto Banús — it’s sharper than you’d think, almost sweet. Our sailor, Javier, grinned and handed out glasses of cava before we’d even left the dock. He told us to keep an eye out for dolphins (I thought he was joking), but five minutes later someone shouted and there they were — three of them, just gliding past like it was nothing special. The Costa de Marbella looks totally different from out on the water. You get this wide-open view of the city and those pale mountains behind it, all kind of hazy in the sun. At one point I just lay back on the solarium cushions and let everything blur together: music, chatter, that weirdly comforting smell of sunscreen and sea air. There’s something about being out there that makes you forget your phone exists.

I tried paddle surfing for maybe three minutes before giving up and just floating around while Javier laughed at my “technique.” Snacks kept appearing — olives, chips, some little sandwiches — and every time my glass was empty someone would top it up without a word. It felt easy in a way I didn’t expect; nobody cared what time it was or if we looked ridiculous jumping off the side for a swim. The sun felt heavy by late afternoon but not in a bad way… more like you could finally relax into it.
