The Experience

The dive starts with 10 minutes of theory on the beach, kept simple and spoken in English, Spanish, French, German or one of six other languages. Then you walk into the water and spend 5 minutes getting used to breathing through the regulator while the instructor holds you steady in the shallows. Once you're comfortable, you descend together, starting at 1 meter and moving down to a maximum of 6 meters. The instructor stays with you the entire time, holding your hand if you need it, and the equipment itself works like a lifejacket—if anything feels wrong, you can inflate it and float back up safely with your guide.

You'll spend 45 to 50 minutes underwater exploring what lives on the seafloor around Palma: octopus, moray eels, grouper, cuttlefish, peacock wrasse and smaller fish moving through the rocks. The whole experience, from arrival to leaving the water, takes about 2 hours. The dive site is 15 minutes by car from Palma city, and the operator arranges the location—you don't pick it yourself. GoPro Hero 10 photos and videos come with every dive, so you leave with footage of what you saw down there.

This is a private group: one instructor, two divers maximum, nobody else in the water with you. The instructors, Alex and Jose, have 13 years of teaching experience and thousands of dives between them. You don't need to know how to swim, and the dive works for any fitness level, though you can't dive within 12 hours of flying—book accordingly if you're traveling that day. Rental equipment and insurance cost 110€ per person and are paid on the day of the activity.

What do I actually see underwater off Mallorca?

How deep do we go, and what if I panic underwater?
