The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the sound — cicadas buzzing somewhere in the pines as we followed our guide down this narrow path, shoes crunching over dry needles. The air smelled like salt and resin. I’d barely caught my breath from the drive when suddenly there it was: a rocky cove with water so clear you could see every pebble. Our guide (Miguel — he grew up nearby) handed out masks and water shoes. I hesitated for a second — even in winter that sea is cold — but someone else dove right in, laughing. So I did too. It wakes you up fast.
After drying off on sun-warmed rocks (I forgot how good that feels), we wandered through old stone houses where bougainvillea spills over every wall. Miguel pointed out a bakery where his grandmother used to buy bread — he said the owner still remembers her order. In Deià, we climbed up winding lanes to a lookout with views that don’t really fit into photos. Lunch was at this tiny place where the waiter switched between Catalan and Spanish without missing a beat; I tried to order in both and probably made a mess of it. The olive oil tasted grassy and sharp, nothing like what I get at home.
Later we hiked again, this time under taller trees where the light flickered green on our faces. There was this moment — just silence except for distant waves and someone’s shoes scuffing behind me — that felt almost suspended in time. We found another little spot for swimming (colder than before!) but by then nobody cared about goosebumps or messy hair.
The last stop was this cliffside viewpoint Miguel called “his favorite place on earth.” He didn’t say much while we stood there; honestly none of us did. The sea looked endless from up there, wind tugging at our jackets. I keep thinking about that view now when things get noisy back home.
What’s included
