The Experience
We hopped into the little electric tuk tuk just outside the Royal Palace, and I’ll admit—I was kind of skeptical about seeing so much of Madrid in only an hour. But our driver, Javier, had this easy way of weaving through the city’s streets, pointing out corners I’d have missed on foot. The air smelled like roasted chestnuts near Plaza de Oriente (someone was selling them from a cart), and you could hear church bells echoing behind us as we zipped off. I kept grinning at how people waved or did that Madrid half-nod when we passed—somehow it didn’t feel touristy at all.
We rolled past the Almudena Cathedral (so much bigger up close than in photos) and then over to Cibeles Fountain—Javier joked about Real Madrid fans climbing it after big wins. It was sunny but cold; he handed us blankets without making a fuss, which honestly saved me from shivering. The Prado Museum looked almost intimidating with its stone lions and crowds out front. He rattled off names like Velázquez and Goya but also told us where to get decent churros nearby if we wanted to come back later. That felt genuine—like he actually lives here and isn’t reading from a script.
The best bit for me was San Miguel Market. You catch a whiff of jamón as you pass—the food stalls inside are legendary but even from outside, you can see people laughing over wine glasses at noon (no one judges in Spain). We couldn’t stop everywhere since it’s an express tour, but Javier slowed down enough for photos at Puerta de Alcalá and shared a story about how they built it before Paris had its Arc de Triomphe—he seemed proud of that detail. The whole thing felt fast but not rushed, if that makes sense. I still think about that first glimpse of the palace gardens as we circled back around.
