Narrow streets and cliff-edge views in villages built on Moorish foundations.

A private shore excursion from Cadiz port explores three whitewashed villages on Spain's Atlantic coast (Arcos de la Frontera perched on a cliff above the river, Vejer de la Frontera with its Jewish Quarter and castle, and Conil de la Frontera by the sea) with a local licensed guide, air-conditioned minivan transport and a break at Trafalgar Cape. The tour runs eight hours and returns you to the cruise terminal in time for re-boarding. You choose the group size at checkout (up to 20 guests, up to 6, or 2 people only). Bottled water and fuel surcharge are included. Lunch is on your own.

The experience

The tour departs from the cruise terminal with a local guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language. You travel by air-conditioned minivan through the countryside toward Arcos de la Frontera, a whitewashed village that rises from a cliff overlooking the river. Once there, you wander the narrow streets to the Basilica Menor de Santa Maria, a 15th-century church, and the Palacio del Mayorazgo, a former Moorish royal residence filled with artifacts. The village itself is the draw: steep alleys, whitewashed walls, and views down to the valley below.

From Arcos, the route follows the "bull route" through the countryside to Vejer de la Frontera, which the operator describes as arguably the prettiest white village in the region. You explore the Jewish Quarter, see the Castillo de Vejer fortress and the Plaza de Espana, a plaza with a fountain, palm trees and cafés overlooking the inner city and valley. A lunch break happens here before the group moves on to Trafalgar Cape, where you hear the history of this coastal landmark and its views of sandy dunes and open ocean.

The afternoon ends in Conil de la Frontera, a whitewashed seaside village where you can walk the unspoiled beaches and centuries-old landmarks, or sit at one of the cafés. The minivan returns you to the cruise terminal in time for re-boarding. The timing is planned around your ship's departure, which is the reason a full inland trip fits inside a port call. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and service animals are allowed.
