The Experience

You don't expect the owner to be standing in the vineyard when you arrive. At the first winery, she walks you through her family's cellar herself, pouring wines while Montserrat mountain rises behind the vines like something from a postcard nobody quite believes is real. The Penedés region produces some of Spain's best cava and wine, and this tour takes you to three small, family-run operations where you taste directly from the people who made it. The guide meets you at 9am across from Palau de la Música in Barcelona, and from there it's a drive into the countryside where the air changes and the pace does too.

The second stop is even more intimate — you're standing in cellars the owners literally carved out by hand, tasting wines chosen based on what you actually like, not what's on a list. By 2pm you're eating lunch at a farmhouse restaurant positioned right in the middle of the vineyards, with a choice of traditional Catalan dishes. The third winery operates on biodynamic principles, which means the grapes are grown organically but with a philosophy that goes deeper than that. You walk through the vines, taste a substantial selection of wines, and finish with an olive oil tasting. The whole day is eight people maximum, which means you're not shuffled through like a tour group — you're part of a small conversation about wine.

The minivan returns you to Barcelona around 6:30pm. What stays with you isn't just the taste of the cava or the wine; it's the moment when someone's grandmother walks past in the family home, or when an owner explains why they chose to farm this way. This is a wine tasting tour that doesn't feel like a tour.
