The experience
The tour opens at May 18 Democracy Square, the symbolic heart of the uprising. The circular fountain and plaza in front of the former South Jeolla Provincial Office became the final stronghold where citizens rallied against military dictatorship during those ten days in May 1980. You stand where the people gathered to express their determination and solidarity, a place that now hosts memorial ceremonies and continues to hold the weight of that resistance.
From there, the guide takes you through the May 18 Archives, housed in the former Gwangju Catholic Center. The permanent exhibition halls walk you through the uprising day by day: photographs, videos, documents, and personal testimonies that show the courage and sacrifice of the people who lived through it. A separate stop brings you to a building still marked by 245 bullet holes from helicopter strafing, preserved as evidence of the violence. From the rooftop garden, you see the city and Mudeungsan, the mountain beloved by Gwangju residents. The forensic analysis confirmed the bullets came from above. The person who gave the order has never been identified.
Lunch is your choice from seven local dishes: yukjeon (thin beef pancakes cooked at your table), marinated pork ribs, raw crab in soy sauce, or vegetarian options like hanjeongsik, jeon platters, fresh bread from Gwangju's iconic bakery, or seasonal fruit sandwiches. You pay on the spot, ranging from 12,000 to 38,000 KRW depending on what you order. The final two stops are the May 18 National Cemetery, where victims and those who died later from their injuries are buried, and May 18 Liberty Park, built on the former site of the Sangmudae military base where approximately 3,000 citizens were detained, interrogated, and tortured. The original military court and prison have been reconstructed to show the conditions prisoners endured.
