The experience

The day starts at Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO-designated Confucian settlement from the Joseon Dynasty where you walk through both tiled-roof houses (giwa-jip) that once belonged to nobility and thatched-roof dwellings (choga-jip) of commoners. A licensed guide explains the layout and history before you have an hour to explore on your own. The village centers on two ancestral homes (Yangjindang Manor, the head house of the Ryu clan, and Chunghyodang House) both built to embody Confucian ideals of loyalty and filial piety. A 600-year-old zelkova tree called Samsindang stands in the village, rooted in local belief as a protector of the community.

After Hahoe, the tour moves to Byeongsan Seowon and Dosan Seowon, two Confucian academies where a guide explains their role in Korea's philosophical and educational past. The route also includes Bongjeongsa Temple, a Buddhist site founded in 678 AD during the Silla Dynasty, notable for its Daeungjeon (Main Hall) and stone monuments. You'll stop at Buyongdae, an observation deck on a cliff above the Nakdong River, offering views back toward Hahoe Folk Village and nearby historical sites where the scholar Yu Seong-ryong wrote records of the Imjin War. The deck is popular at sunset for its panoramic views and quiet forest walks.

The tour includes a performance of Hahoe Byeolsin Gut, the traditional mask dance designated as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. Dating back to the 12th century, it began as an agricultural ritual to pray for good harvests and ward off misfortune, and evolved into a theatrical performance combining music, dance, and storytelling. The masks represent different characters (villagers and mythical beings) each carrying distinct traits and social commentary. The day ends with night views of Andong Dam, where lights reflect on the water. Private transportation and admission fees are included. Bottled water is provided. The full tour runs 8 to 10 hours.
