The Experience

Your eyes open and you’re already at the edge — sand everywhere, the kind that squeaks under your sneakers. The Walker Bay nature reserve feels quiet in that way only early mornings can be, except for our guide’s voice (I think his name was Pieter?) explaining how fatbikes don’t really sink, even on these dunes. I half-listened, honestly, because I couldn’t stop staring at the ocean below. It looked impossibly far away for a “mostly downhill” ride. Someone in our group asked if we’d see whales — Pieter just grinned and said, “Wait and see.”

The first push off was awkward (I’m not a pro biker), but the bike felt weirdly floaty over the sand. Cold wind on my face, sun just starting to warm up my jacket — you know that feeling when you don’t quite trust your balance but it’s fun anyway? That was me for most of the first stretch.
