The full experience runs about 4 hours from arrival to departure, including 2–2.5 hours at sea. Children under 12 need a valid junior diving certification to participate in the cage; younger children can watch from the boat. If no sharks appear, you receive a no-shark voucher valid for 2 years toward a return trip.

The Experience

Gansbaai's shark cage diving works differently from standard SCUBA: instead of carrying tanks on your back, you stay inside the cage and breathe through a regulator connected to a continuous air supply pumped from the boat. That setup means you don't need certification, don't need to equalize pressure, and can stay underwater for long stretches watching the water around you without the clock running down. The crew and marine biologists walk you through safety and shark behaviour before you enter the cage, so the only thing you're managing is what you're seeing.

Your time at sea runs 2–2.5 hours depending on shark activity and conditions, and the full outing from arrival to departure takes about 4 hours. You'll see a variety of shark species and other marine animals; sightings aren't guaranteed given how unpredictable the ocean is, but if sharks don't show, the operator gives you a voucher to return within 2 years at no extra cost (transport is separate). Breakfast, lunch, snacks, coffee and tea come with the booking, along with a wet suit, hood, booties and goggles.

Children from age 5 can join, though those under 12 need a valid junior diving certification to enter the cage itself; younger kids can watch from the boat. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and the activity suits all fitness levels. Round-trip transport from your accommodation is available as an optional add-on.
