The experience
The day starts at the Cape Shark Adventures meeting point with breakfast and a safety briefing before you head to the boat. A short trip out to sea brings you to the cage, where you'll descend to watch sharks pass close by: great whites, bronze whalers, cape fur seals, and occasionally short-tail stingrays, sunfish or sevengill sharks. The cage keeps you stationary while the sharks move freely around you. The guide manages the bait and narrates what you're seeing. After about two to three hours in and around the water, you return to the dive center for warm showers and a hearty lunch with a view of the coast.
The second half of the day shifts to whale watching on a different vessel. You'll spend another two to three hours on the water looking for Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales and Bryde's Whales, depending on the season. The same guide provides context about the animals and their behavior. Refreshments are available throughout both activities, and the whole experience wraps by mid-afternoon.
You can book this as cage diving and whale watching alone, or add transport from your accommodation. Children from age 12 are welcome. Infants cannot go on the boat. The activity suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries or weighing over 120kg. No prior snorkeling or diving experience is necessary. The guide handles the setup and safety.

Is this one for you?Book the combo with transport if you're arriving in Gansbaai without a rental car or prefer not to drive after an early start and a full day on the water. The fixed schedule (cage diving in the morning, whale watching after lunch) keeps both activities inside one day, so you don't need to split the marine wildlife between separate trips.
Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (15 to 17 years); Child (12 to 14 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What sharks will I actually see in the cage at Gansbaai?
Great white sharks are the main draw, but you'll also see bronze whalers and cape fur seals regularly. Less common sightings include short-tail stingrays, sunfish and sevengill sharks. The guide cannot guarantee which species will appear on any given day, as they move freely in the ocean.
Do I need diving or snorkeling experience to go in the cage?
No experience is required. You descend into the cage fully clothed or in a wetsuit (provided), and you stay inside while the sharks swim around you. The guide manages all the logistics and explains what you're seeing.
How much time do I spend in the water versus on the boat?
Shark cage diving lasts about two to three hours total, including the boat ride out, time in the cage and the return. Whale watching also runs two to three hours. You'll spend most of that time on the water, though not submerged. You're either in the cage or standing on the whale-watching vessel.
What happens if whales aren't around on the day I go?
Whale watching depends on the season and where the animals are migrating. Southern Right and Humpback Whales are most common during their seasons, but sightings are never guaranteed. The guide will take you to the areas where whales have been spotted recently and explain the marine ecosystem you're moving through.
Is transport from my hotel included, or do I arrange my own way to the meeting point?
Transport is optional. You can book the cage diving and whale watching alone and make your own way to the Cape Shark Adventures meeting point, or add transport from your accommodation as part of your booking. Public transportation options are also available nearby.
