Six kilometers of dune descent on a fatbike, from fynbos trail to beach

Fatbike dune riding near Gansbaai takes you down 185 meters of sand dunes to the beach in a single afternoon descent through Walker Bay Nature Reserve. You ride a fatbike down steep dune faces on a narrow sandy trail, learn to read animal tracks and dune structure as you go, and finish on the beach with an English-speaking guide and small group. Transportation to the top and all gear are included; the ride takes about 2.5 hours start to finish.

The Experience

The ride starts near Grootbos nature reserve and climbs to the trailhead, where you begin on a narrow sandy horse trail running through fynbos. After about 1 kilometer, the dunes open up and the descent begins. The guide briefs you on how to ride the steep faces—slalom technique, weight distribution, how the sand itself slows the bike down—before you drop in. The dune faces look impossible until you ride them; the sand does the braking work, and every big dune has an easier route around it if you want one. This is not a race and not a technical skill test; as long as you can ride a bike, the day works.

Between runs down the dune faces, you stop to look for animal tracks and learn what lives in the reserve—the fauna, the structure of the dunes themselves, how the landscape holds together. During whale season, you may spot them from the dunes as you ride. Once you reach the bottom, a 4x4 path takes you down to the beach, one of the ten least crowded beaches in the world, where the vehicle meets you. Water is provided on the bikes throughout, and the guide captures photos and video of the day.

Is this one for you?Small groups mean you get personal instruction on the dune descents and time to stop and read the landscape—the guide adjusts the pace to the group, not the other way around. If you ride a bike and want to move through a landscape rather than watch it from a vehicle, this is the format that makes it possible.
