Journey along Sani Pass to Lesotho

  • Visit Himeville stables
  • Board 4x4 vehicle
  • Climb Sani Pass with stops
  • Get passport stamped at border
  • Meet local host in Basotho village
  • Sample traditional bread and beer
  • Lunch at Africa's highest pub

The experience

The tour starts with a drive from Durban to Himeville, the town at the base of the Sani Pass. From there you climb into a rugged 4x4 and tackle the steep, winding mountain pass that connects South Africa to Lesotho. Your guide navigates the daunting terrain, stopping at strategic points along the way so you can take in the vistas and mountain landscapes. Depending on the season, the slopes shift from white snowy terrain to lush green, and your guide shares insights into the flora, fauna, history and people of the area as you climb.

At the border, you get your passport stamped and enter Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom. Your first stop is a small Basotho village where you'll enter a rondavel and meet a local host who introduces you to Basotho culture and shares traditional bread with you. If beer has been prepared, you'll taste it too. From there you head to Africa's highest pub, sitting at 3,240 meters above sea level. Lunch is your own cost, but the walls of the pub and the views make it a bucket-list moment. The traditional bread pairs well with the soup offered there, and there's a WiFi hotspot if you need it.

At this altitude it can get icy, so you'll wear an authentic Basotho blanket for the day. It's yours to use during the tour. The drive back down the mountain and return to Durban completes the 13-hour itinerary. Bring a current valid passport. If you need a visa to enter Lesotho, it's your responsibility to arrange it before the tour.
