The day starts with pickup from your Durban hotel and a drive through the rolling farmland of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands toward the Southern Drakensberg. You'll arrive in Underberg, a small village at the foot of the mountains, where you transfer from the sedan into a 4×4 built for the terrain ahead. Your guide meets you here and gives a brief introduction before the real climb begins.

From Underberg, the route follows the Mkomazana River through the Sani Valley, where sandstone cliffs rise on both sides and mountain streams cut across the road. The pass itself is the work—a series of tight switchbacks that climb steeply toward the South African border post. Your guide talks through the geology, the history of the route, and the wildlife and people of the region as the vehicle navigates the rugged terrain. After border formalities, you continue up toward the summit and the Lesotho border, where the landscape opens into vast highland vistas.

Once across into Lesotho, you stop at a traditional Basotho village to meet members of the community and learn about daily life in one of the world's highest inhabited regions. You'll taste freshly baked Basotho bread and local beer, a direct connection to the mountain culture. From there, the tour heads to a mountain lodge perched high above the valleys, where you have lunch with views across the Lesotho Highlands and the Drakensberg escarpment. The descent back down Sani Pass offers a completely different perspective of the switchbacks and cliffs. You arrive back in Underberg around 4:00 PM for a complimentary coffee stop, then return to Durban at approximately 6:00 PM.
