The experience

The day starts with pickup at 6am from your Durban accommodation for a 2.5-hour drive south through Pietermaritzburg and into the Southern Drakensberg foothills. You'll pass rural villages and farmland before reaching Underberg, where you switch into a 4x4 vehicle with your guide. From there the road narrows and steepens: 8 kilometres of gravel climbing 1,000 metres through a World Heritage site to the Lesotho border post at 2,840 metres elevation. The bends are tight and the views open constantly. On clear days you can see across the escarpment for kilometres.

Once through border control, you enter the remote Lesotho Highlands. Your guide will take you to a small stone village built to serve local shepherds, where you'll learn about their daily life and traditional practices. You may spot Basotho herders in their characteristic blankets and head attire moving across the high grasslands. After the village visit, you head to the Highest Pub in Southern Africa, perched on the escarpment edge with a deck overlooking the pass: a natural stop for lunch and drinks (at your own cost) and some of the best photo angles on the route.

The return winds down the same spectacular bends, retracing the pass in reverse before the long drive back to Durban, arriving around 6pm. Bring your passport, a warm jacket, water, sunscreen and a camera. The summit is cold and exposed even on warm days below.

Top questions

What's the actual driving like on Sani Pass itself?

Sani Pass is an 8-kilometre gravel road that climbs steeply through tight switchbacks, gaining 1,000 metres to reach 2,840 metres elevation. The 4x4 vehicle is essential for the terrain, and the road is narrow but well-established. Your guide handles the driving while you sit as a passenger.

Do I need a passport to cross into Lesotho?

Yes, a valid passport is essential. You'll pass through South African border control and then Lesotho border control at the top of the pass. The guide handles the formalities, but you must have your passport with you.

How much time do we spend in Lesotho?

After crossing the border, you'll spend roughly two to three hours in the Lesotho Highlands, including the village visit and lunch at the pub. The rest of the day is the drive from Durban and the ascent and descent of the pass itself.

What wildlife might we see on the drive up?

Bird life is common throughout the pass, and you may see eland, baboons and small buck. The Drakensberg is a World Heritage site with endemic flora and fauna, though wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch and drinks at the Highest Pub are at your own cost. The tour includes the guide, transport, the village visit and bread tasting, but you'll pay separately for any food or beverages.
