The experience
The day starts at 6am in Durban with a drive along the N3 highway past Pietermaritzburg and through the Natal Midlands. The road winds toward Underberg, a town in KwaZulu-Natal where the landscape begins to shift and the air cools. At Underberg you leave the regular vehicle and climb into a 4x4. The only way up what comes next. Sani Pass is a World Heritage site, a gravel winding pass that climbs higher and steeper than any other in Southern Africa, rising to 9,429 feet above sea level. As the altitude increases, the road narrows and becomes more treacherous, and the views open across the Drakensberg Mountains.
Once you cross into Lesotho, the tour takes you to a traditional Sotho village where you see rural life firsthand: the way people live in the high country. Lunch and a drink at Africa's highest pub mark the summit of the day, a moment to rest and take in the scale of what you've climbed. The pass itself offers what the description calls exceptional views: as human habitation disappears behind you, the vast, desolate beauty of the mountains becomes the only landscape.
The full day runs 12 hours from start to finish. Bottled water is provided throughout. A live guide in English leads the group and explains what you're seeing as the terrain changes. The tour is physically demanding (the operator notes you should have at least a moderate level of fitness), but the 4x4 does the climbing. You experience it from inside the vehicle.
