Sail through the Knysna Heads and out to open ocean, then anchor for lunch on the lagoon

A 2.5-hour sailing charter from Knysna Waterfront that takes you through the Knysna Lagoon, attempts passage through the Knysna Heads into the Indian Ocean, and returns for a light Mediterranean lunch served on board. Weather and sea conditions determine whether you reach open water or stay in the lagoon. The skipper makes that call on the day. A live English-speaking guide accompanies the charter, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available with advance notice.

Step-by-step itinerary

Sail and lunch on Knysna Lagoon

  • Depart from Knysna Waterfront
  • Sail through Knysna Lagoon
  • Pass by Knysna Heads if conditions allow
  • Sail out into Indian Ocean if possible
  • Return to Knysna Lagoon
  • Enjoy Mediterranean style lunch onboard
  • Return to Knysna Waterfront

The experience

The charter departs and returns at Knysna Waterfront, where you can spend time before or after exploring the restaurants and shops. Once aboard, you sail through the Knysna Lagoon toward the Heads: the narrow passage that opens to the Indian Ocean. If sea and weather conditions allow, you'll pass through and into open water for true sailing freedom. If conditions are poor at the Heads, the skipper keeps the charter going in the lagoon instead, so the day adapts to what the ocean offers that morning.

A light lunch of savoury snacks, seasonal fruits and cheeses is served on the way back through the Knysna Lagoon. The vessel operates under a no-shoe policy, so you'll remove your shoes before boarding (socks are fine). Bring a warm layer. It's cooler out at sea than on land. The charter is shared with other passengers, and infants sit on an adult's lap. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free meals can be arranged if you let the operator know when booking.

All trips depend on weather and sea conditions, which shift with tide, wind direction and speed, and sea swell. Only the skipper can judge whether it's safe to attempt the Heads on your day. Beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are available at a cash bar. The crew runs a tab during the charter and you settle it before leaving.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can we sail out through the Knysna Heads on this charter?

Passage through the Knysna Heads depends entirely on sea and weather conditions on the day of your charter. Tide, wind direction and speed, and sea swell all influence whether it's safe to attempt. The skipper makes the call that morning. If conditions prevent it, the charter continues in the Knysna Lagoon instead, so you still get a full sail.

What does the lunch include on this sailing charter?

Lunch is a light Mediterranean-style meal of savoury snacks, seasonal fruits and cheeses, served on board as you return through the Knysna Lagoon. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available if you request them when booking.

What should I wear or bring for the 2.5-hour sail?

Bring a warm top or jacket because it's cooler out at sea than on land. Shoes must be removed before boarding the vessel, though you can wear socks if you prefer. Leave the shoes ashore and go barefoot or in socks on deck.

Is this charter suitable for infants or very young children?

Infants can join the charter and must sit on an adult's lap during the sail. The experience suits all physical fitness levels, so families with young children can book with confidence.
