Sail through the Knysna Heads and into the open ocean

A 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise from Knysna takes you across the lagoon, through the Knysna Heads passage, and out to the sea caves and coves of the Garden Route coastline. Your local guide points out the geology, estuary life and marine habitat as the boat moves through the water; groups stay under 25 people, and you pick from three departure times when you book. Marine life sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

Step-by-step itinerary

Knysna Lagoon and Marine Cruise

  • Board boat at Thesen Island Marina
  • Travel through Knysna Lagoon
  • Pass Knysna Heads to the ocean
  • Explore caves and coves along coastline
  • Return through Knysna Lagoon to marina

The Experience

The boat leaves Thesen Island Marina and heads into the Knysna Lagoon, crossing the estuary so you can see the headlands and the surrounding landscape from the water. The real passage comes next: the Knysna Heads, the narrow channel where the lagoon opens to the ocean. Depending on the day's conditions, the boat takes you through to the open sea, where the coastline breaks into caves, coves and bays carved into the headlands. Your guide explains what you are seeing—the geological forces that shaped the rock, the estuarine and marine ecosystems, the species that live in and around the water.

The tour runs 1.5 hours total. Groups are capped at 25 people, which means you are not packed shoulder-to-shoulder on the deck. You can pick your departure time from three options when you book. The guide is local and speaks English. All trips run subject to sea and weather conditions; the operator reserves the right to cancel if minimum passenger numbers are not met, and if that happens, you get a refund.

Marine mammals and other wildlife are wild and free-roaming, so sightings are not guaranteed—the operator does not offer refunds if you do not see them. Infants sit on an adult's lap and count as a passenger with a seat. The tour is not recommended for children under 3 or for travelers with spinal injuries or high-risk pregnancies. Service animals are allowed on board.
