You’ll taste your way through Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam by bike—sampling Hainanese chicken rice or carrot cake, Malay curry puffs or gado gado, and Indian roti or thosai along the way. Expect laughter with your local guide, quick stops for photos or rain breaks (ponchos included), and plenty of stories that stick with you long after you finish pedaling.
I signed up for the Singapore Bike & Bites Food Tour mostly because I wanted to see more than just the shiny side of the city. Didn’t expect to end up laughing with strangers over curry puffs in Kampong Glam or nearly falling off my bike (don’t worry, I didn’t) when our guide Li pointed out the “real” carrot cake at a hawker stall in Chinatown. The bikes are big-wheeled and honestly way easier to ride than I thought — even weaving through the morning bustle felt kind of fun once we got going.
We started in Chinatown, where the air was thick with incense and frying garlic. At one point, Li explained how Hainanese chicken rice is basically a national obsession here — he even showed us his favorite stall, which had this line that snaked around old men playing chess. I tried to say thank you in Mandarin and probably butchered it; Li just grinned. Then we cycled to Little India, passing shops selling garlands so bright they almost hurt my eyes. The Tekka Centre was chaos in the best way — spices everywhere, people shouting greetings across stalls, and I swear I still smell turmeric on my hands sometimes.
Kampong Glam was next — sunlight bouncing off the Sultan Mosque’s golden dome. We sat on low stools outside a little bakery eating rendang curry puffs while Li told us about Malay royalty and how this area used to be their stronghold. A group of kids zipped past us on scooters yelling something in Malay; someone waved. It rained for about ten minutes but honestly it felt good after all that cycling. Ponchos came out (mine was neon green), but nobody seemed to mind.
I didn’t expect to feel so connected by the end — not just to the food or places but to everyone pedaling along with me. If you’re curious about Singapore beyond its skyscrapers, this bike tour is probably the most real slice you’ll get in half a day.
