The experience
Dragana is a self-taught cook who grew up in a small village in Kosovo and now lives in Belgrade with her family. She grows her own vegetables and teaches travelers to make the Serbian food she ate growing up. The class happens in her home in Ripanj, a suburb of Belgrade, and runs three hours. You'll learn to prepare two dishes from scratch: choose between prebranac (baked beans), sarma (Serbian stuffed cabbage) or pilav (rice with spices and vegetables or meat), and while those cook, you'll bake proja, a traditional Serbian cornbread. Each main dish comes with a salad, bread, dessert and your choice of appetizer: smoked meat with clotted cream and eggplant dip, a salad, or dumpling soup.
If you add the optional market tour, the experience starts at Banjica green market, an open-air farmers' market where Dragana takes you to her favorite vendors and teaches you how to pick the best produce. In summer months, you'll also visit her garden to see the vegetables she grows there. After shopping, you walk back to her home to begin the cooking class. The market tour is included only with the two options that pair the class with a meal. If you book cooking and lunch alone, the market visit is not part of the package.
Dragana teaches in English or Portuguese and can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets if you let her know when you book. The menu may shift with the season. Her home is in Ripanj, a suburb accessible by public transportation. The operator does not arrange hotel pickup or drop-off.
