Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit Speyside whisky distilleries

  • Tour Benromach Distillery
  • Tour Glen Moray Distillery
  • Tour Benriach Distillery
  • Visit Cooperage for barrel-making tour
  • Visit Glenfiddich Distillery
  • Visit Aberlour Distillery
  • Tour GlenAllachie Distillery
  • Tour Glenlivet Distillery
  • Tour Tomatin Distillery
  • Tour Glenfarclas Distillery

“You’ll never taste the same dram twice up here,” our driver Alan grinned as he handed me my first glass somewhere outside Tomatin. The van still smelled faintly of rain-soaked wool and crushed heather from our last stop. I’d barely settled in when he started telling us about his uncle who used to sneak barrels downriver at night — not sure if that part was true or just another whisky story, but it set the mood. There’s something about hearing these tales while you’re actually rolling through the Highlands that makes you feel like you’re part of them, even if just for a day.

The private Speyside whisky tour isn’t just about ticking off distilleries (though we did manage Glenlivet, Benromach, and a few others). It’s more like wandering into someone’s living room and being handed their best bottle. At Glen Moray, our guide Fiona let us smell the barley mash before it hit the stills — warm, sweet, almost bready. Later she paired a dark chocolate square with a peaty single cask pour; I’m not kidding, it changed everything I thought about whisky and chocolate together. I tried to describe the taste but ended up just laughing because words didn’t really cut it.

We had snacks (Scottish shortbread is now my weakness), water when needed, and even IRN BRU for those of us who wanted to pretend we were locals. The van was comfortable — big windows for watching sheep dotting green hills between stops — and there was WiFi too, though honestly I barely touched my phone except to snap photos of fog rolling over Glenfarclas. Alan kept offering up stories and letting us pick which distillery came next; apparently if you ask nicely they’ll even try to fit in Macallan or a cooperage visit. No pressure anywhere, just good company and more than ten single malts from their own collection — some old enough to make you pause before sipping.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected by the end of it all. Maybe it was the whisky (probably partly), but also something about sharing those quiet moments between tastings — standing outside Aberlour with rain misting down or listening to Fiona explain why sherry casks matter so much for flavor. I still think about that view from Glenlivet’s tasting room: soft light over endless fields, everyone silent for once except for Alan humming some tune under his breath. If you’re after a real Speyside whisky day trip from Inverness or Edinburgh — one where you actually meet people who care about what’s in your glass — this is it.
