The experience

You start at 9:15 am from the Columba Hotel in Inverness and travel by air-conditioned Land Rover or minibus through the Highlands toward Speyside. The route takes you through the Spey Valley, where golden barley fields line the whisky trail: barley being one of the three key ingredients in single malt production. Your guide, a professional in traditional Scottish dress, leads the tastings and explains how each distillery's approach to water, ingredients and aging creates its signature character.

Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin comes first. The distillery went "back to basics" after a 2008 ownership change and now produces the Elgin Heritage range: 12-, 15- and 18-year-old single malts. You'll taste these and see how the traditional methods have been preserved. Next is Glenfiddich, one of the few family-owned distilleries in Dufftown, where you taste their award-winning single malt and learn why it remains the most awarded in its category. Lunch happens at a bar built in 1896 and designed to resemble a ship, giving you time to absorb what you've learned before the afternoon leg.

After lunch, you head to Cardhu Distillery, established in 1824 by former whisky smugglers John and Helen Cumming. Helen would fly a red flag to warn neighbors when excise men were staying at their farm. A detail that makes the distillery's 200-year history tangible. Cardhu was one of the first to partner with John Walker & Sons and still produces what the distillery describes as the "elegant, smooth, sensual character of Cardhu" single malt. The tour ends with a final stop at Glenfarclas, family-owned and managed since 1865. You return to your Inverness accommodation by late afternoon.

Top questions

How many distilleries do we visit on this tour?

The tour includes tastings at four distilleries: Glen Moray, Glenfiddich, Cardhu and Glenfarclas. You spend time at each one learning about their production methods and tasting their single malts.

What's included in the price of the tour?

The tour includes a professional kilted guide, air-conditioned vehicle transport, pickup and drop-off from your Inverness accommodation, and access to the distilleries. Whisky tastings and lunch are separate costs, typically £10 to £20 per person depending on which distillery experiences you choose.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to meet the tour?

No. The tour picks you up from your accommodation in Inverness or en route, and drops you back at the end of the day. You only need to be ready at your hotel by 9:00 am for a 9:15 am departure from the Columba Hotel.

What makes Cardhu Distillery historically unusual?

Cardhu was founded in 1824 by former whisky smugglers John and Helen Cumming. Helen famously flew a red flag to warn neighbors when excise men were staying at their farm, helping protect the illicit operation. The distillery has remained in the same family for 200 years and was one of the first to partner with John Walker & Sons.

Is this tour suitable if I'm not an experienced whisky drinker?

Yes. The tour is designed for all physical fitness levels and is suitable for anyone aged 18 and over. Your kilted guide explains the production process and the differences between each distillery's approach, so you'll learn as you taste, whether you're new to whisky or already familiar with it.
