The experience

The tour leaves Sibiu at 10:00 and heads first to Biertan, about 40 minutes away through Transylvanian countryside. The village centers on its fortified church: a 15th-century Gothic structure with Renaissance details and defensive walls that made it a center of Lutheranism in the region. You walk the village itself, seeing the peaceful surroundings and the architecture that earned it UNESCO status.

Sighișoara comes next, the day's main stop. The medieval citadel is one of Europe's best-preserved walled towns, and the Clock Tower, the symbol of the citadel, sits at its heart with a museum and views across the rooftops. You can climb the Covered Staircase up to the Church on the Hill, a 13th-century building that overlooks the whole town, or explore the Stag House and other medieval homes on the narrow streets below. The birthplace of Vlad the Impaler is here too, if history and folklore interest you.

The final stop is Viscri, a traditional Saxon village where horse-drawn carts still move through cobblestone streets and local craftsmanship remains part of daily life. The 12th-century fortified church here is simpler in style than Biertan's but no less significant: its defensive walls and Saxon design are what made the whole village a UNESCO site. You walk through to see how people live, photograph the rolling hills and rustic buildings, and understand what rural Transylvania looks like when tourism has not yet reshaped it.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and German.

What's the Clock Tower in Sighișoara and why is it the symbol of the citadel?

The Clock Tower is the most recognizable landmark in Sighișoara's medieval citadel, standing at its center. It houses a museum and offers views across the town and surrounding countryside from the top, making it the focal point of the walled town's layout and history.

Can I climb up to the Church on the Hill, and what will I see from there?

Yes, the Covered Staircase leads up to the Church on the Hill (Biserica din Deal), a 13th-century building on a hilltop. From there you get views across Sighișoara and its surroundings, so it's worth the climb if you want to see the citadel from above.

What makes Biertan's fortified church different from the one in Viscri?

Biertan's church, built in the 15th century, is a larger Gothic-Renaissance structure with intricate stonework and was a major center of Lutheranism in Transylvania. Viscri's 12th-century church is simpler in design but equally important: its defensive walls and Saxon style are what earned the whole village UNESCO protection.

How much time do we spend in each village, and how long is the drive between them?

The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total. Sibiu to Biertan takes about 40 to 45 minutes by car. The route is scenic and passes through countryside. The itinerary gives you time to walk Biertan and Viscri and explore Sighișoara's citadel, though the exact breakdown depends on your group's pace and interests.

Is food included, or should I plan to eat in one of the villages?

Food and drinks are not included in the tour price. You'll have time to eat in Sighișoara or one of the other villages, so plan accordingly or bring something with you.

Do I need to pay extra to enter the churches?

Entry to Biertan Fortified Church costs 7 euros extra. Viscri's church is also a UNESCO site, and entry details depend on current access. Your guide will advise on the day. Sighișoara's Church on the Hill is accessible as part of walking the citadel.
