The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup in Bucharest and a drive south toward the Danube. The Friendship Bridge (a 2,223-meter steel span built by Soviet engineers in the 1950s) connects Romania to Bulgaria. Its central 85-meter section still lifts for oversized boats. Once across, the road runs through villages and agricultural land toward Veliko Tarnovo, a city that clings to a canyon carved by the Yantra River. A guide travels with you the whole way, explaining the landscape and history as the terrain shifts from flat farmland to the steep hills ahead.
The hike itself is short and easy, starting from Arbanasi, a UNESCO-listed village. You walk to the Love Swing, a cliff-edge overlook named for the swing rocker that hangs over the drop, and you can try it yourself. The guide points out details of the landscape and the history of the region. After the hike, you have time to explore Veliko Tarnovo at your own pace: the market street Samovodska, lined with renovated old houses and traditional craft workshops, bakeries and the Hadji Nikoli Inn from 1858; the steep cobbled streets that wind down to the river; and Tsarevets Fortress, the medieval stronghold that once housed royalty, now standing on the hilltop with its church painted in a distinctive Art Deco style. The guide accompanies you through the fortress and explains its past and present. You return to Bucharest by evening, the drive retracing the route through the villages and back across the Danube Bridge.
The road itself is part of the journey: nine to eleven hours total, with the hike and town exploration built into that time. After heavy rain or snow, the path to Love Swing becomes muddy but remains passable. An air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi keeps the long drive comfortable, and walking sticks are available if you want them. The guide speaks English, Italian or Romanian, depending on your preference.
