The experience
The hike starts at Vidraru Dam, Romania's highest dam, and enters Valea lui Stan from there. The trail is 9 km long, with 2.5 km actually running through the canyon itself. You'll use stairs, ladders and suspended walkways to navigate past waterfalls and rock faces, and you'll cross the river several times: sometimes wading through water that is cold but not deep. The terrain is well laid out despite its complexity, and the canyon opens into a wilderness area surrounded by forest and rocks.
What makes this route demanding is not technical climbing but the repeated water crossings and the sustained physical effort over up to 6 hours. After heavy rain or snow, water volume increases significantly. You'll need hiking shoes and waterproof clothes. An extra change of clothes is useful. The operator provides trekking poles and bottled water, and a private guide leads the hike in English, Italian or Romanian. Round-trip driving time from Bucharest is 5 hours, with the hike itself taking the remainder of the day depending on your pace and fitness.
Children from age 13 are welcome on the trail. The hike is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, bad knees or during pregnancy. You'll need at least moderate physical fitness to complete it. If you decide to turn back during the hike because the difficulty exceeds your condition, no refund is issued.

Is this one for you? This hike demands sustained physical effort over up to 6 hours with repeated river crossings and ladder work, so it suits hikers with at least moderate fitness who are comfortable getting cold and wet. The fixed route and guide mean you don't navigate yourself, but the terrain and water exposure require genuine mountain hiking experience and preparation.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Italian and Romanian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years). Children under 13 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Valea lui Stan and why does the hike start at the dam?
Valea lui Stan is a canyon in the Carpathians that runs from Vidraru Dam downward through forest and rock. Starting at the dam puts you at the highest point, so the 9 km route descends through the canyon rather than climbing into it, making the physical demand more manageable than an uphill approach would be.
Will I get wet crossing the river, and how cold is the water?
Yes, you will cross the river multiple times and will likely get wet. The water is cold but not deep enough to be dangerous. Waterproof hiking clothes and an extra change of clothes are essential. Bring a dry bag or pack for anything that cannot get wet.
How long does the hike actually take, and what affects the duration?
The hike takes up to 6 hours depending on your physical condition and pace. The trail itself is well marked and not technically difficult, but the repeated river crossings, ladder sections and sustained walking over uneven terrain mean the time varies widely between groups and individuals.
What happens if I need to turn back partway through?
If you decide to stop hiking because the difficulty exceeds your physical condition, you can return to the starting point, but the operator does not issue a refund. The hike is graded as rather difficult, so assess your fitness honestly before booking.
Is lunch provided, and what should I bring to eat?
Lunch is not included. Bring your own food and snacks. The operator provides bottled water. Plan for a full day of activity with minimal stops, so pack enough calories and hydration for sustained effort.
