The Experience

“Is that really a tuk tuk?” I asked our driver, Alex, who just grinned and waved us in. We squeezed into the back — blankets already waiting (it was colder than I’d guessed for spring), and off we went down Calea Victoriei. The city felt different from this low seat, wind carrying the smell of roasted chestnuts and exhaust, old buildings sliding by close enough to touch. It’s almost absurd — Alex said walking around it would take half an hour (I believe him). We pulled over at Constitution Square for photos; honestly, I just stood there gawking for a minute. Later, we zipped through neighborhoods I’d never have found alone — embassies tucked behind iron gates, fountains that looked like something out of Paris (except with more pigeons). There was this moment by the Romanian Athenaeum when music drifted out of an open window and everything felt strangely peaceful for a city tour.

Alex handed us some Romanian snacks — not sure what they were called but salty and perfect after all the wind in my face. He gave us tips on where to eat later (I wrote them down; still need to try sarmale). The best part? He let us stop wherever something caught our eye — graffiti here, an old villa there. No rush, no script. We ended up right back where we started but somehow felt like we’d gone way further than just a loop around Bucharest.
