The Experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel and the day starts at Piata Unirii (Unirii Square), moving straight into the Palace of Parliament. The building is 12 stories tall with 8 underground levels, the last one an anti-atomic bunker connected to the city's main institutions through 20 kilometers of catacombs. It holds the Guinness World Record for the heaviest building in the world and is one of the most expensive ever constructed. Nicolae Ceausescu built it as his vision of a reinvented Bucharest, and walking through it means standing inside the physical monument to that era.
From there, the route follows Calea Victoriei (Victoriei Avenue), stretching nearly 3 kilometers through one of Bucharest's oldest streets. The avenue reveals the city as it was a century ago, when it was still called the "Little Paris"—époque architecture and pre-communist elegance that survived the decades. You stop at Piata Universitatii (University Square) and Piata Revolutiei (Revolution Square), where the 1989 uprising ended Ceausescu's rule. The tour also takes in the Arch of Triumph, built between 1922 and 1936 to commemorate Romania's role in World War I.
The Old Town section shows you a different Bucharest entirely—lively cafes, street food, historical sites and hand-painted details packed into one of Eastern Europe's most active neighborhoods. The CEC Palace and Stavropoleos Monastery sit within the same area. Then comes the Village Museum, an open-air ethnographic museum near Herastrau Park that opened in 1936 and holds 360 monuments and 60,000 objects. Walking through it, you see reconstructed traditional Romanian villages complete with a church, windmill, watermill and folk arts—a shift from the urban sights that came before it. Your guide drops you back at your hotel when the day ends.

What exactly is inside the Palace of Parliament that I get to see?
The Palace of Parliament is open to visitors on a guided tour, and you walk through the interior spaces of the building itself—the massive halls and chambers that make up one of the world's largest buildings by floor area. The tour does not include access to the underground levels or the catacombs; those remain closed to the public.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
The Old Town section and the Village Museum both involve walking on foot, and you'll walk along Victoriei Avenue and through the main squares as well. The total tour runs 6 to 8 hours, so comfortable shoes are essential. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all other fitness levels.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, though the Old Town has numerous cafes and restaurants where you can eat if you choose. Budget around 12 euros per person if you want to stop for a meal.
Can children go on this tour?
Children from age 5 can join the tour when accompanied by an adult. The minimum age listed is 12 years for some considerations, but younger children are welcome with a guardian present.
What is the Village Museum actually like?
The Village Museum is an open-air museum built in a unique architectural style, showing what traditional Romanian village life looked like centuries ago. You walk through a reconstructed village with a working church, windmill, watermill, folk art displays and hand-crafted decorations—it functions as a time portal to rural Romania before modern development.
Is the guide included, or do I hire one separately?
A professional English-speaking guide is included in the tour price. The guide may speak additional languages including Spanish and French, and leads the entire day from hotel pickup through the final drop-off.
