The Experience

The Palace of Parliament is the second-largest administrative building on the planet after the Pentagon, and it stands as a monument to the excess of Romania's communist regime. Your guide walks you through the structure and its history, explaining what totalitarian megalomania looked like in concrete and marble. From there, the minibus takes you to the National Village Museum, where traditional Romanian houses from across the country — built from wood, adobe, stone and other materials — sit in one open-air space. You'll see wooden churches, mills and the everyday objects that held rural communities together for centuries, all without leaving the city.

Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue) is where the contradictions of Bucharest's past collide. On one side stands the Royal Palace; on the other, the former headquarters of the Communist Party's Central Committee. Your guide points out the old Orthodox churches, the Romanian Athenaeum concert hall (opened in 1888), the CEC Palace, museums, theatres and the shops and restaurants that line the street. Revolution Square is where Nicolae Ceausescu fled by helicopter in December 1989, ending decades of dictatorship — your guide explains the events that unfolded there and what led to that moment.

The Old City Centre brings you to Hanul Lui Manuc, a fortified inn built around 1806 that once served as a gathering place for merchants passing through Bucharest. The surrounding streets hold more churches, museums, restaurants and an experiential library where you can pick up books and souvenirs. The tour wraps at the Patriarhy Church. Transport is by private minibus with your driver and guide; the whole route takes between 3.5 and 4.5 hours depending on stops and traffic.
