The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when our guide pulled up outside the hotel in Bucharest — I’ve never been much of an ATV person. The drive out only took about an hour, but it felt like we’d left the city behind completely by the time we reached these rolling hills and thick patches of forest. There was this earthy smell in the air, kind of sharp from last night’s rain, and I remember thinking: okay, this is real Romania now.

Our local guide — Mihai, who had this dry sense of humor — handed us helmets and gave a quick rundown (I probably looked more confused than I meant to). We paired up on the ATVs; I rode with my friend, who immediately gunned it way faster than I would have. The first few minutes were bumpy as hell — mud splattering everywhere, branches brushing past my arms — but then something just clicked. You start to feel the rhythm of the trail under your hands.
