The experience
The Alba Iulia bastion fortification is the largest fortress in Romania, built and rebuilt over more than 300 years. What makes it unusual is that each new fortress was built around the one before it, so walking the citadel means moving through three distinct epochs layered on top of each other: the Roman castrum, the medieval fortress, and the Alba Carolina Citadel from the 18th century. Your guide leads you through 25 tourist attractions across the site, including the Principia (the command center of the XIII Roman Legion Gemina), the Prince Palace, the Coronation Cathedral, the Union Museum and Hall, and the defense structures (bastions, gates, ravelins and ditches) that ring the whole complex.
After the citadel walk, you descend into the catacombs beneath the fortress, where Vinoteca Hugo occupies a cellar that has stored wine for more than 70 years. The collection now holds over 12,000 bottles of premium Romanian wines, many produced between 1952 and 1972. An oenologist with 16 years of winemaking experience leads the cellar tour and guides you through a tasting of four wines: a classic sparkling wine, a white, a rosé and a red, all produced from Romanian grapes. The tasting includes croutons, walnuts and water.
