The Experience
I still had sand in my shoes when we got back to MIA Park. The day started fast — our guide Khalid pulled up right on time, grinning like he knew what was coming. I’d barely finished my coffee before we were out past the city, windows down, warm air already smelling faintly of cardamom and dust. It’s strange how quickly Doha gives way to that emptiness; one minute there’s glass towers, then just dunes rolling out forever.
At the camp, they handed us bottled water and gave a quick run-through — not too serious but you could tell they’d done this a thousand times. The quad bikes looked meaner than I expected. I stalled mine twice (Khalid laughed, “No worries, happens all the time!”), but once we got moving it felt wild — engine buzzing under me, sand flying up behind. There’s something about that first big dune: you think you’ll tip over but somehow you don’t. My hands were shaking a bit after the first run. And then someone from another group yelled out in Arabic — everyone cheered when he made it over the ridge.
We switched off for a camel ride later. The handler — I think his name was Saeed? — showed us how to hold on as the camel stood up (awkward is an understatement). He told us stories about his family living out here before all the highways came in. The sun was low by then and everything turned gold for a while. I tried sandboarding too, mostly ended up with sand in my mouth but it was worth it for that view at the top. Still can’t believe how quiet it gets out there between engines — just wind and your own breathing.
