The Experience

I didn’t expect the Corniche to feel so wide open—the air off the bay actually smelled a little salty, almost clean. Our guide (his name was Feroz) pointed out the skyline as we drove along; I kept trying to spot the Museum of Islamic Art through the glass but got distracted by all the joggers weaving past families on the promenade. It was warmer than I thought it’d be for this time of year—my shirt stuck to my back before we even reached Souq Waqif.

Souq Waqif itself is a maze, honestly. You turn one corner and it’s spices hitting your nose—cumin, cardamom—and then suddenly you’re dodging a guy pushing a cart loaded with what looked like saffron packets. Feroz laughed when I tried to pronounce “machboos” (I definitely butchered it), but he seemed happy that we were curious about everything. There were birds singing somewhere overhead—maybe in those little cages?—and I caught myself just standing still for a second, soaking up all the noise and color. I think that’s when Doha started to feel real for me.

We stopped at Katara Cultural Village next, which felt almost theatrical after the souq—blue tiles on the mosque glowing in sunlight, gold domes that nearly blinded me when the sun hit right. There was a group of school kids on a field trip crowding around their teacher near the amphitheater; their voices echoed off all that marble. We wandered into a gallery (air conditioning! thank you) and saw some modern art I’m still not sure I understood, but it made me smile anyway.

The Pearl-Qatar was our last stop before heading back—a man-made island with yachts lined up like they were showing off. It felt glossy and new compared to everywhere else we’d been. Feroz told us stories about how fast this part of Doha had grown; I tried picturing what it looked like before all these towers went up. By then my feet were tired and my head was full—so much contrast in six hours, from old market smells to polished marinas. Still thinking about that first blast of spice at Souq Waqif though…you know?
