The experience

You start in the city, moving through four distinct stops that show different sides of Qatar. Souq Waqif is the traditional marketplace where Bedouins and locals have traded for over a century: the original building dates back at least to the 20th century and still sells spices, handicrafts and traditional garments alongside restaurants and shisha lounges. Katara Cultural Village sits on the eastern coast with an amphitheater, opera house, cinema and a museum dedicated to Qatar's maritime heritage. The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island spanning nearly four square kilometers, built on the site of Qatar's former pearl diving grounds before the oil boom. The National Museum, designed by architect Jean Nouvel and inspired by the desert rose crystal, takes you through galleries arranged chronologically, from the natural history of the desert and Persian Gulf through Bedouin culture, tribal wars, the establishment of the state, and the discovery of oil to the present.

After the city portion, you get into a Land Cruiser and head into the desert. The safari is the part most visitors choose as the best way to complete a Qatar trip. The dunes are where the landscape shifts entirely from the urban waterfront. The route covers the fabled sand dunes that define the country's interior, and the drive itself is part of the experience. The vehicle handles terrain the city streets don't offer.
