The Experience

The first thing that happened was a shopkeeper at Souq Waqif handing me a tiny glass of cardamom tea—no words, just a smile and a little nod. I’d barely stepped inside and already felt like I was in someone’s living room. Our guide, Firas, pointed out the spice piles (“this one is for machboos rice!”) and laughed when I tried saying it in Arabic. The air was thick with oud perfume and grilled meat smoke; there was this low hum of bargaining everywhere. Honestly, I could’ve stayed longer but we were off again—past the Museum of Islamic Art (the light on that white stone is unreal), then along the Corniche where families strolled with ice creams even though it was barely noon.

After lunch (flatbread still warm from the oven, dipped in something lemony I can’t pronounce), we drove out toward The Pearl-Qatar. It’s all yachts and fancy towers—almost too clean? But then you catch kids chasing pigeons on the plaza or an old man feeding stray cats behind a marble bench. Firas told us how fast this place has changed; he sounded proud but also a little nostalgic. We didn’t linger long because the desert was calling. There’s this moment when city turns to sand—you see it through the window and suddenly everything feels different.

Dune bashing is wilder than I expected. You hear nothing but tires over sand and your own heartbeat. My seatbelt dug into my shoulder as we crested another hill—everyone yelling or laughing or both. Then quiet: we stopped at Khor Al Adaid, where desert meets sea in this weird hush. The wind picked up, carrying salt and something dry I still can’t name. Camels waited nearby, chewing like they had nowhere else to be. Someone handed me cold water; I just stood there squinting at the blue-green line where land ends—I still think about that view sometimes.
