Snorkeling Tres Palmas reef in Rincon with turtles and laughter

You’ll start right from Rincon’s Black Eagle Beach with a friendly local guide who makes beginners feel at home. Wade into clear water, learn easy snorkeling basics, then drift over colorful reefs and maybe spot a sea turtle or two—all while your guide snaps photos and videos you’ll actually want to share.

1h 30m

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Meet at Black Eagle Beach
  • Review snorkeling safety and basics
  • Practice snorkeling in waist-deep water
  • Snorkel tour of coral reef
  • View aquatic life and fish
  • Receive photos and videos

The first thing I noticed was the way the sunlight flickered on the water at Black Eagle Beach—like someone shaking a handful of coins just under the surface. I was honestly nervous (hadn’t snorkeled since I was a kid), but our guide, Luis, grinned and said, “You’ll be fine—just breathe slow.” He handed me my mask and flippers, and sand stuck between my toes as we shuffled to the edge of the water. The ocean felt cooler than I expected, but not cold. More like a relief.

We started out in waist-deep water—maybe three feet? Luis showed us how to clear our snorkels if we got water in them (I did, twice, and coughed so loud a little girl next to me giggled). He kept things light, joking about his own first time. Once we were floating above the reef at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, everything went quiet except for my own breathing and the muffled clicks of fish nibbling coral. There were flashes of yellow and blue everywhere—parrotfish darting around—and then someone tapped my arm. A sea turtle glided by so close I could see algae on its shell. Didn’t expect that part.

Luis had this waterproof camera rig strapped to his wrist; he kept snapping photos while pointing out things I’d never have noticed on my own—a tiny shrimp hiding in purple coral fans, a school of silvery fish moving like one big shape. At some point I realized I’d stopped thinking about how awkward my fins felt or whether my hair looked ridiculous under the mask. Just floating there, salt on my lips, sun warming my back—I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck at work.
