The Experience

"The reef is just steps away from the shore," Carolina tells you when you arrive at the beach in Rincón, and she means it literally. You meet her and Edwin right there on the sand—no boat ride, no long drive to a marina. They hand you a wetsuit that fits, walk you through the snorkel gear so you're not fumbling with it in the water, and run through the safety stuff without making it feel like a lecture. They're both water people first (Edwin surfs, Carolina dives), so they know what it's like to be nervous before you go under.

Once you're in, they point out the coral formations and the fish living inside them—parrotfish, wrasses, sergeant majors, the whole cast.
