The Experience

“If you see a pelican dive, that’s where the fish are,” said Carlos, our guide, right as one of those big birds splashed down maybe twenty feet from my Chiliboat. I’d never been on a water bike before—honestly, I thought I’d tip over in the first five minutes. But the thing was steady, more like pedaling a floating park bench than anything sporty. The sun was already hot at 9am and the air smelled like salt and sunscreen. There were just six of us, plus Carlos and his cousin (he called him ‘el primo’), laughing about who’d get their shoes wet first.

The ride out to Los Cayos took about twenty minutes—slow enough to watch little silver fish dart beneath us and mangrove roots twist into the water. Sometimes the breeze would pick up and you’d catch it cool on your arms; sometimes it just went still and all you could hear was the pedals turning. At one point Carlos pointed out a tiny heron perched in the shade. “They always hide there when it gets too bright,” he said. It felt like we were far from everything but really, La Parguera was just behind us—close enough you could hear music drifting from shore if you stopped pedaling for a second.

I didn’t expect how clear the water would be at the natural pool. You could see straight down to sand ripples and patches of sea grass waving under your feet. We parked our Chiliboats side by side (they’re double bikes—my partner did most of the work, not gonna lie) and slid into waist-deep water that felt warmer than bathwater but fresh somehow. Carlos handed around fruit salad in plastic cups—pineapple mostly, with some mango—and told us about growing up here, sneaking out to swim when he was a kid. He said something about how everyone in La Parguera learns to swim before they can ride a bike; I guess now you can do both at once.

We had maybe an hour in that pool—just floating or talking or watching clouds move past the cays. There wasn’t any rush to leave; nobody blowing whistles or hurrying us along. When it was time to head back, I kept looking over my shoulder at that patch of turquoise water until it disappeared behind a mangrove clump. Still think about it sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home—you know?
