The Experience
The first thing I noticed was how salty the air tasted—maybe nerves made it sharper. We were standing under this faded pavilion in Rincon, getting our briefing from Luis, who’s lived here his whole life. He handed out fins and masks and asked about shoe sizes (I panicked for a second—do I say US or EU size?). The group was small, just me and two others, and you could hear waves slapping at the sand maybe twenty meters away. Luis talked us through the basics—hand signals, don’t hold your breath, that sort of thing. I tried to pay attention but kept glancing at the water.
We walked right off the beach into the shallows—no boat, which felt less intimidating somehow. The sand was hot at first but then cool underwater; I wobbled getting my fins on and nearly fell over (Luis laughed, said everyone does that their first time). When we finally ducked under, everything went quiet except for my own breathing—loud and slow through the regulator. Fish zipped past in little flashes of blue and yellow. The coral wasn’t as bright as postcards but looked alive in a way I didn’t expect. Luis pointed out a tiny crab wedged between rocks; I never would’ve seen it alone.
I got nervous halfway through when my mask fogged up (classic rookie move), but Luis signaled me to pause and helped clear it without making a big deal. There was this moment where sunlight filtered down and made these shifting patterns on the sand—I still think about that view sometimes. After maybe half an hour we surfaced, salt drying on my lips, everyone grinning like kids who’d gotten away with something secret.
