The Experience

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure if I’d actually go through with it. Heights aren’t really my thing — but when our driver pulled up at this rainforest zipline park outside San Juan, something about the air (all green and damp and sharp with leaves) made me want to try. The van ride from our hotel was about an hour, and our guide, Carlos, kept pointing out little things along the way — a bakery he liked, a mountain that looked like a sleeping woman. I liked that. It felt less like a tour and more like tagging along with someone who knew the place.

The first line is always the hardest. My hands were sweating inside those thick gloves they give you (which, by the way, smell faintly like pine sap and old leather). There’s this moment just before you step off where everything goes quiet except for birds somewhere below. Then you’re flying over the trees — not gracefully, at least in my case — but honestly? It’s wild how fast your fear turns into something like joy. You see these flashes of blue sky between branches and for a second you forget there’s even a harness holding you up.

Carlos waited at every platform with this patient grin. He told us about his cousin who works nearby and how people here believe the forest has its own spirit. I tried to say “thank you” in Spanish (I probably butchered it; he laughed anyway). On the last line, rain started coming down in these fat drops — not enough to soak us but just enough to make everything smell more alive. The drive back was quieter; everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or maybe just tired in that good way after doing something new.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup anywhere in Puerto Rico by air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water to keep cool on humid days, all your ziplining gear—harnesses, gloves, helmets—and plenty of stories from local guides as you cross each platform before heading back together after your adventure.
