The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost chickened out at the first platform. The harness felt snug but my palms were sweaty, and there was this thick, earthy smell in the air that made everything feel more real. Our guide, Carla, grinned like she’d seen this a hundred times (she probably had). She checked my helmet and said, “You’re going to love the last two lines,” which honestly sounded more like a threat than encouragement at that moment. But then someone behind us yelled something in Spanish — I think it was “¡Vamos!” — and suddenly we were off.

The first few zipline runs weren’t too high up, just enough to get your heart moving. By the third line you could see the treetops opening up below, all tangled green and flashes of birds darting past. I caught a whiff of wet leaves every time I braked on a platform. Carla or one of her crew would always be there to unclip me and set me up for the next line — they moved fast but always double-checked everything (I noticed that because I’m kind of paranoid about heights). There was a lot of nervous laughter from our group, especially when someone tried to say “rainforest” in Spanish and totally butchered it — even Carla laughed.

The last two lines were wild — so much longer than the others, you really have time to look around. Wind in your face, legs dangling over what looks like endless green. It’s loud with bugs and birds but also weirdly peaceful up there; I didn’t expect that part. When I landed after the final run my hands were shaking but I couldn’t stop smiling. My shirt smelled like metal from the harness and sweat mixed together (not glamorous), but honestly? Worth it.
